Drill Jig Fixture

Posted by Earl Powell on

When making up tool handles for metal spinning tools the most difficult part is getting the Ø 3/4" x 100mm deep hole in the end of the hard maple dowel rod both concentric and parallel with the center-line of the handle. I have developed a plastic collet with a Ø3/4" drill jig bushing that is epoxied in place in the plastic collet. If the collet is a little lose you simply install a hose clamp and tighten as appropriate. Just use a fast cut auger drill bit like the one shown. It is also helpful to use a little linseed oil as a lubricate for both the drill in the bushing and the drill in the hard maple.
