Ques. What are the applications for metal spinning?

Ans. Today metal spinning is used for many applications: lighting fixtures, cooking utensils, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and aerospace.  There are Youtube videos showing SpaceX spinning their rocket engine parts.

Ques. What metals are suitable for metal spinning

Ans. Steel, stainless steel, white metals such as aluminium, pewter, zinc, silver, and red metals such as copper, brass, bronze, and titanium, which must be spun hot.

Ques. What is the nature of the metal spinning process?

Ans. In the past it could have been charactorized as hard physical work. Today it is becoming a popular hobby and professional artform.  It is a technology being offered in many Makerspaces.

Ques. Is much skill required in metal spinning?

Ans. In general, metal spinners are highly skilled.  However, I have been teaching a two hour metal spinning class at the Techshop and it is a truly rare occasion when one of my students is unable to yield a completely functional Popcorn Bowl (class project)

Ques. What is the effect of faulty metal spinning?

Ans. The metal is stretched to an uneven thickness or may even be cracked.

Ques. What is considered good metal spinning?

Ans. A finished piece cross sectional thickness should have less than 25% variation from the original thickness.

Ques. What is the relative pressure required red metal, copper, brass, bronze, and white metal, aluminium, pewter, zinc?

Ans. Red metals such as copper, brass, and bronze require more presure because of the greater resistance offered to the forming tool.

Ques. When should metal be formed by spinning and by the use of dies?

Ans. Today with the general availablilty of CNC metal spinning machines, dies are being used less. However, hand metal spinning is great for prototyping and small production runs.

Ques. Why not use dies?

Ans. Dies, and the press to use them are expensive, and metal spinning mandrels are cheap and easily made. Moreover they are seldom damaged in use.
